From Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird,
"There is ecstasy in paying attention. You can get into a kind of Wordsworthian openness to the world, where you see in everything the essence of holiness, a sign that that God is implicit in all of creation. . . To be engrossed by something outside ourselves is a powerful antidote for the rational mind, the mind that so frequently has its head up its own ass---seeing things in such a narrow and darkly narcissistic way that it presents a colo-rectal theology, offering hope to no one."
I've been thinking about this concept lately, as I'm driving to and from work in Logan Canyon. It's a breathtaking canyon any time of the year, but I am definitely partial to the frost-covered pines and large snow banks the border the highway during the winter. I am awed by the natural beauty of the outdoors wherever I go, but I've found that if I'm distracted by my own preoccupations I fail to notice. So that's the lesson for myself today: pull your head out and pay attention, Britt.
